I’m not just a crabby old woman.
I’m a young girl really at heart.
What do you see, when you all look at me?
A really old woman? Or do you really see me?

We grew up together, a long time ago.
We worked for long hours, when wages were low.
No TV, no wireless, and times were hard.
Just cold water taps and a walk up the yard.
No holidays abroad, no posh carpets on floors.
But had coal in the fire, and didn’t lock doors.

We married and loved, the way the things were.
We built our homes, with no money to spare.
Our children arrived, no pills in them day.
We brought them all up, without any state aid.
They were all quite safe, to go out in the park.
All of the old folk, could go out in the dark.

No Valium, no drugs, no LSD.
We cured most of our ails with a nice cup of tea.
But if you were sick, you were treated at once.
No filling up forms, and come back in six months.
No vandals, no muggings, we had nothing to rob.
We were both quite rich with a couple of bob.

We were so much happier in those far off days.
We dealt with our struggles, in our traditional ways.
We both got our fair share of struggle and strife.
We just faced what we had to, the pattern of life.

But now I’m alone, I look back through the years.
I recall all the moments, that I will hold dear.
I remember the love that we shared together,
and thank god for that love, which I’ll treasure forever.

So what do you see when you look at me.
A really old woman? Or do you really see me?

NOTE: I found this hand written poem after my mum had passed. It made me cry when I read it. I believe it may be inspired by ‘Look Closer, See Me’. I added a line or two as it didn’t flow in some places. I tried to keep the tone the same.
I believe the poem is about my Aunt, her sister. They were thick as thieves when they were together, and I doubt this is about anyone else. I initially thought it was her ex-husbands, one of them being my father. However her vocabulary concerning her marriages could be quite blue.
